Why We Follow Christ Through Paul
The Revelation of the Mystery (KJB)
Many sincere believers today say, âWe just follow the red letters of Jesus in the Gospels.â
But when we read the actual words of Jesus in the King James Bible, we discover something very important.
During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ clearly said He was sent to Israel â not to the Gentiles.
1. Jesusâ Earthly Ministry Was Sent to Israel
Matthew 10:5â6
King James Bible
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Jesus Himself restricted the mission.
The apostles were forbidden to go to the Gentiles.
Matthew 15:24
King James Bible
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
This statement is unmistakable.
During His earthly ministry, Christâs mission was directed to Israel under the prophetic program.
2. After the Resurrection â A New Revelation Appears
After the cross, resurrection, and ascension, something extraordinary happened.
The glorified Lord Jesus Christ appeared from heaven to Saul of Tarsus.
Acts 9:3â5
King James Bible
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
And he said, Who art thou, Lord?
And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
This was not the earthly Jesus of the Gospels.
This was the risen, glorified Christ from heaven.
3. Christ Chose Paul Personally
The Lord then revealed to Ananias why Saul had been chosen.
Acts 9:15
King James Bible
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
Notice the order.
Gentiles first.
Something new had begun.
4. Paulâs Apostleship Came Directly From Christ
Paul repeatedly explains that his apostleship did not come from the twelve apostles or from men.
Galatians 1:11â12
King James Bible
But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Paul received direct revelation from the risen Christ.
5. Paul Was Appointed the Apostle of the Gentiles
Romans 11:13
King James Bible
For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
The twelve apostles were sent to Israel.
Paul was sent to the Gentiles.
6. Christ Revealed a Hidden Mystery to Paul
Paul teaches something never revealed before.
Ephesians 3:1â3
King James Bible
For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,)
This mystery program was not revealed in prophecy.
Romans 16:25
King James Bible
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
Notice the two elements:
âą My gospel
âą Preaching Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery
7. The Pattern for the Body of Christ
If we want to follow Christ today, Scripture gives us the pattern.
1 Corinthians 11:1
King James Bible
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
Paul does not replace Christ.
Paul points us to Christ, according to the revelation given to him.
8. Why We Follow Paul
We follow Paul because Christ appointed him.
The risen Lord Jesus Christ:
âą appeared to Paul
âą saved Paul
âą revealed the Mystery to Paul
âą sent Paul to the Gentiles
Therefore the Body of Christ today learns who we are in Christ from Romans to Philemon.
The Conclusion
We absolutely believe every word Jesus spoke in the Gospels.
But to understand what Christ is doing today, we must listen to the apostle He sent to us.
That apostle is Paul.
And therefore we preach:
Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery.
