Protective gear for adventure bikes and dual sport bikes! How much protective gear should you put on your dual sport or adventure- motorbike? What do you think are the essentials? A strong skid plate or bash plate is probably the most important item, even if you don't plan on riding in rocky terrain or hopping over logs. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. If your motorbike doesn't have one, we strongly recommend buying one. These not only protect your radiators, but also your plastic panels, fuel tank and fairings. My fellow PR7 riders both chose CrossPro crash bars through Thork Racing which are made of alloy and a lot lighter than the common heavy duty steel ones. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. Our AJP PR7 has a reasonably good bash plate. Regular riding in rough terrain would need this stronger version from Thork Racing. If you don't mind the extra weight, Titan do an even bigger bash plate to protect more of the exhaust pipe. The next most important dual sport bike protection is handguards. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. Great for safer riding at night. I put this on my helmet too. There are various types of protection for your upper fork legs against flying stones. Titan sell these 'fork skins' specifically for the PR7. Let us know if you have further tips for protecting your adventure motorbike. Usually your new dual sport or adventure motorbike has no handguards. Or it will have the cheap 'open' handguards which are sometimes called 'flag-style' handguards. The AJP PR7 actually comes with Polisport handguards which are quite good. But we fitted the Barkbusters from our previous motorbikes as they generally the strongest handguards available. Radiator protection for adventure bikes? There are two main options here. The first is crash bars. A lighter option is to just fit radiator guards on your dual sport bike or PR7. Me? I chose these radiator guards from Thork Racing and then this radiator cover from OVmoto. It's been great for keeping the weight down. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. Most adventure riders agree that strong handguards, bash plate, and radiator protection are the key elements to protecting your motorbike. Engine case covers. Enduro Hog cover a wide range of enduro and adventure models. These fit very snugly and I found them easy to fit once I let them warm up in the sun first! Mirrors. I have been using Double Take mirrors for years now. They are virtually unbreakable as they move instead of breaking. When you get into hard terrain you can just fold them out of the way. Case savers. These are different to the case covers mentioned earlier. The AJP PR7 has a metal piece to keep a broken chain away from the engine case. We will put these in the pinned first comment. This video is part of our comprehensive series on setting up your dual sport or adventure motorbike. We also fitted this front sprocket cover from OVmoto as added insurance. Frame protectors. I googled around and spotted these carbon guards from 3D Moto for the PR7. A cheap do-it-yourself option? Just cut pieces of an inner tube and zip tie them to your frame. These probably won't prevent a bend in your frame from a big impact. But they will prevent wear and also provide extra grip for your legs against the frame. Headlight protection. Headlights on adventure motorbikes can be very expensive to replace. The AJP PR7 is no exception. We chose these silicon guards that are held on with zip ties. Plastics. You can protect your plastic panels and upper fork legs with heavy duty clear tape. Free mods. Luggage. Wheels. Ergonomics. And more. And we include lots of tips specifically for the mighty AJP PR7. The AJP PR7 has white panels so a useful option is white reflective tape. It blends in well with the white plastics but it lights up like a Christmas tree at night time. ========================== AFTERMARKET PARTS FOR THE AJP PR7?
