Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch told a House Appropriations Subcommittee the administration was not moving forward with the fund. He refused to put that statement in writing and asked Congress to take him at his word. He was not under oath. Fitzpatrick spoke with eight people familiar with the fund, including current and former DOJ officials, current and former members of Congress, a defense attorney, and political operatives close to the administration. All of them said DOJ officials and White House allies have privately indicated the payout idea remains active, with officials exploring how to reactivate elements of the fund or find alternative arrangements to compensate January 6 defendants before the midterms.
