BBC Eye speaks to Ukrainian civilians abused in Russian-occupied Ukraine and tracks down the prison guards, officials and soldiers likely responsible. Click here to subscribe to our channel đŸ‘‰đŸœ https://bbc.in/3VyyriM Since 2014 when Russia occupied parts of Ukraine, escalating with the full-scale invasion in 2022, thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been held illegally, some for years, in Russian-run detention centres. Many were subjected to torture and conflict-related sexual violence - like Liudmyla Huseinova, wrongly detained in the notorious Izolyatsia prison in Donetsk. This film tells Liudmyla’s story, the story of other survivors, and their search for justice. Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine are beyond the rule of law; international bodies have no free access. Ukrainian prosecutors have only been able to bring to trial a handful of individuals for war crimes in person, and none for sexual violence. In this investigation, survivors working with #BBCEye track down apparently ordinary men - guards, officials and soldiers - who likely abused them. The investigation also exposes the scale of the Russian-run detention network; BBC Eye has verified the existence of 93 detention centres in Russian-occupied Ukraine, and 102 detention centres in Russia where Ukrainian civilians are kept. The Russian Embassy in the UK said that Russia has consistently advocated respect for the rule of law and allegations of war crimes being committed are investigated by the Russian authorities. 00:15 Liudmyla’s story 02:54 Nuremberg: site of historic war crimes tribunals 05:07 Izolyatsia: Russian-occupied Ukraine’s notorious detention centre 06:39 Oleksandr’s story 07:23 Ruslan’s story 10:37 Investigation reveals number of detention centres 11:09 Finding a friend in rescue-dog shelter 12:32 Liudmyla’s arrest 13:42 Surviving Izolyatsia 17:52 Bohdan’s OSINT investigation 19:07 Perpetrators are revealed to Liudmyla 22:54 Ukraine intercepts Russian soldier phonically 24:09 ‘Irena’s’ story 27:00 Oleksii’s story 28:55 Kherson Temporary Detention Centre 29:58 Exposing ‘Angry’ 34:03 Helping other survivors 35:40 Finding ‘Irena’s’ abuser 40:46 The Ukrainian Prosecutor 42:25 ‘List of Shame’ 43:18 Russia's response to this investigation 43:24 Justice đŸ“œïž Watch more investigative documentaries from our award-winning BBC Eye investigations team at this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4fa8LK1lptsvoA_spfJhzda 🎞 You may also be interested in watching these documentaries: https://youtu.be/ZPvwQJBmna4 https://youtu.be/y7ruSvJfn_g https://youtu.be/z4-koO916Gk https://youtu.be/Y5wajKa4iz8 ---------------- This is the official BBC World Service YouTube channel.
