Description

Here we demonstrate how bubbles reveal the physics of surface tension. Surface tension in films of liquid tries to minimize the amount of energy stored in the surface. When a bubble encloses a fixed volume of air, the surface forms a sphere because that shape has the smallest possible surface area. We dip a line into a soapy solution and lifts it to create a thin bubble wall. When the surface is not closed, different shapes can form. By blowing on the film or gently poking it, we can change the boundaries the liquid attaches to and create new interesting shapes. This demo was presented by Jackson, a DEEP student at @tamu.
