Watch these two clips and tell me what they have in common. The lack of understanding towards the struggles so many families face. The lack of awareness of the cost of living crisis and the decimation of the systems that should be supporting parents. Telling, to say the least. Parents of course have a responsibility to prepare their children for school as best they can. But without trusted guidance and accessible support, that becomes a real struggle especially for families with children who have additional needs, who make up a significant proportion of the stats being laughed at in these clips. If we want to talk about school readiness honestly, we need to talk about what’s been stripped away from families long before a child ever walks through a Reception door. And we need to recognise the Early Years staff who are picking up the pieces every single day.
