Description
A discussion under Rule 193 was held in the Lok Sabha on Monday on the efforts undertaken by the government to eliminate left-wing extremism from the country. Initiated by members Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde and Dr. Byreddy Shabari, the discussion highlighted India’s decisive battle against left wing extremism, often referred to as Naxalism, one of our most serious internal security challenges. Originating from the Naxalbari movement of 1967 in West Bengal, it spread primarily across the "Red Corridor," affecting states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. However, in recent years, India’s multidimensional counter-LWE strategy - combining security enforcement, inclusive development, and community engagement - has delivered significant success. The movement has been systematically weakened, violence has drastically declined, and many LWE-affected districts are being reintegrated into the national mainstream. Union Home Minister Amit Shah replied to the nearly five-hour long discussion in the House – reaffirming the government’s commitment to a Naxal-free India. In Perspective today, we focus on some of these sustained efforts that have weakened the insurgency and how close India really is to ending the LWE threat.
