Description
Hey viewers, Lance Mechanics here — and welcome back to Part 2 of the BMW 328i project.
It’s late, I’m on my 7-on / 7-off shift, and this is one of those “fix it when you can” videos. Today we’re diving into the infamous BMW E90 electric water pump, CAN bus issues, and putting the new Autel/Autofix D1 Lite through a real-world mechanic test, not a studio review.
Instead of a dedicated review video, I wanted to show the tool actually being used in a real diagnostic situation: crawling under the car, unplugging connectors, actuating pumps, and doing live bidirectional testing.

🔧 What We Did in This Video
Jacked up the 2010 BMW 328i xDrive
Removed skid plates and under-tray hardware (Northern Ontario bolts actually came out!)
Inspected the leaking crank sensor from previous owner
Diagnosed CAN bus faults:
Electronic coolant pump missing
IBS/battery sensor codes
Alternator BSD signal missing (2E98)
Used the Autel Autofix D1 Lite to:
Auto-identify the E90
Actuate the electric water pump (50% / 95% / 100%)
Run live data
Clear old codes
Perform service resets (transmission adaptations + oil service data)
Test battery functions
Discovered the water pump was pulling down the network
Installed a new pump (Amazon special… we’ll see how long it lasts)
Narrowed remaining fault down to a BSD alternator/battery signal issue
Added a few 1AM mechanic ramblings for good measure
Accidentally reviewed a scan tool by fixing my BMW 😂
🛠️ Thoughts on the Autel Autofix D1 Lite (Real Mechanic Use)
This isn’t a paid promo — I decided to use the tool in real time so you can see how it performs when things aren’t perfect:
✔ Instant auto-detect once powered
✔ Thin, compact, really nice screen
✔ Same OS as Autel (because, let’s be real… it is Autel)
✔ Bidirectional tests work perfectly
✔ Wireless VCI with OBD-port light makes life easier
✔ Fast on BMW modules
✔ Service resets and adaptations actually work
✔ Great tool for driveway mechanics and techs needing something portable
If you want a full dedicated review, let me know — but honestly, I think this “real job review” format is better.
🔥 The BMW Project Continues…
I still need to track down the BSD alternator signal fault (2E98). The battery voltage reading is suspicious, and I suspect either:
bad IBS sensor wiring
alternator BSD line issue
corroded connector
weak battery throwing off the readings
We’ll dig into that in Part 3.
👨🔧 Why I’m Doing It This Way
I prefer showing tools and repairs in the real world:
No perfect lighting
No staged failures
No scripts
Just me, a broken BMW, and tools that actually get used
If you’re a DIYer, a tech, or someone who likes watching mechanics fight cars in their garages at 1AM… this series is for you.
