Years of untreated infection had caused both her ears to harden, swell shut, and trap her in constant agony. Our hearts shattered as we learned this sweet girl would need two major surgeries to remove both ear canals completely, just to give her a chance at living without pain. Starburst was one of five adult dogs surrendered by her owners after they stated they were being evicted and leaving town on a Greyhound bus with no plans to return. The owners signed the dogs over to the shelter, even acknowledging that euthanasia could happen if space or medical concerns became an issue. Just like that, Starburst’s entire life was turned upside down. But what no one realized at first was just how much silent suffering this sweet girl had been enduring for years. Since January, Starburst had been battling severe, chronic ear disease that had already progressed far beyond what anyone initially realized. When she first came into our care, specialists diagnosed her with chronic bilateral bacterial otitis externa, severe narrowing of both ear canals, and widespread skin infections. As more testing was completed, the reality of Starburst’s health crisis became even more devastating. CT imaging confirmed that years of untreated infection had caused BOTH of Starburst’s ear canals to mineralize and harden. The tissue inside her ears had become so swollen, thickened, and damaged that specialists couldn’t even insert an otoscope into the canals to properly examine them. The infection had essentially sealed her ears shut. To make matters even worse, the bacteria growing inside her ears was resistant to many antibiotics, making treatment incredibly difficult and leaving Starburst trapped in constant pain and inflammation. After months of specialist consultations, cultures, medications, biopsies, anesthesia, hospitalization, and advanced diagnostics, surgeons determined there was only one remaining option to save her quality of life: bilateral TECA-BO surgeries (Total Ear Canal Ablation with Bulla Osteotomy). In simple terms, Starburst’s ear disease was so severe that surgeons had to completely remove BOTH of her ear canals and clean infected tissue from deep within the middle ear cavity. Starburst has now undergone TWO separate major surgeries, one for each ear. As a result of these life-saving procedures, Starburst will now be deaf. But for the first time in who knows how long, she finally has a chance to live without the unbearable agony she endured every single day. Even after surgery, her recovery has been extensive. Her ears remain swollen and inflamed from the years of chronic infection her body suffered through. She has required ongoing hospitalization, intensive nursing care, pain management, repeated anesthesia, antibiotics, cultures, biopsies, and constant monitoring as she continues to heal. Since January alone, Starburst’s medical care has exceeded $12,000 between specialist visits, CT scans, surgeries, hospitalization, medications, diagnostics, anesthesia, cultures, biopsies, and post-operative treatment.
