Performed by the extraordinary Voces8, this piece lives through the human voice alone. These eight remarkable artists shape sound with such precision, warmth, and unity that at times I felt I was hearing a single, living instrument. The only line, ‘nothing is real but the Real,’ is carried with such delicacy and depth that their individual voices emerge as one living sound. The phrase, usually translated as ‘there is no god but God’, I’ve rendered here in its Sufi, philosophical aspect. Working with Voces8 was a gift. Their musical intelligence, artistry, and sheer beauty of tone brought exactly the celestial dimension I was seeking in this composition. This is pure voice. Pure listening. Pure being.
