Description
The Odisha series starts here. I began this leg of the journey from Raipur, riding into Nuapada to cross the border into Odisha. Almost immediately, the conditions became brutal.
India is currently dealing with a massive heatwave fueled by the 2026 Super El Niño effect. This global climate shift is heavily disrupting weather patterns, causing severe rainfall deficits and record-breaking dry heat, particularly across central and eastern India. By the time I crossed the border, temperatures were hitting around 47°C.
In the past, I usually relied on cars or public transport, which provide a physical barrier and air conditioning against extreme weather. Being fully exposed on a motorcycle in 47°C is a completely different level of struggle. The hot winds constantly hit you, dehydration sets in fast, and the physical toll is immediate. The exhaustion on Day 1 was so severe that I seriously considered canceling the entire trip right there.
I have been highly anticipating exploring the geography and culture of Odisha, but facing this kind of extreme heat right out of the gate is giving me second thoughts about whether continuing on the bike is a viable plan.
This is the reality of riding straight into the 2026 Indian heatwave.
