Description
We’re completing the rebuild on our 150 ton jacking cylinder and have to make a new inner tube. The time frame for re chroming is way too long, so the only real option is to make a brand new tube in house before we can move on with the rest of the rebuild. We start by cutting a length of chrome bar on the horizontal bandsaw and bring it over to the lathe to drill and bore it to size. Cutting the external thread needs extra care because we are working straight through the induction hardened layer. Once the tube is ready we move to the mill to machine the slots that will let us tighten it into the barrel. With the new inner tube sorted we turn our focus to finishing the remaining components. Hard anodising the cylinder rod has the same long wait time so we buff the marks and get it ready for assembly. The inner surface of the barrel needs a clean up so we hone it by hand to bring the finish back. After a full clean down we install the new seal kit and start putting the jacking cylinder back together. Once assembly is complete we run a test cycle on the powerpack to make sure there are no leaks and everything is operating the way it should. A fresh coat of paint finishes the job and this jacking cylinder looks like new again and is ready for another long service life!
