We Lost Our Baby Capybara… 💔

We're devastated to share this news about Henry. 💔 Official Statement - Updated 7/7/26 We are deeply saddened to share the unexpected loss of Henry, our beloved capybara. On Tuesday, May 5th, our animal care team observed subtle but concerning changes in Henry’s appetite and behavior. He was immediately transported to our veterinarian for evaluation. Despite prompt intervention and surgical assessment, it was determined that Henry was suffering from a sudden and rapidly progressing condition consistent with a mesenteric torsion. In his case, this involved a twisting of the small intestine that led to a loss of blood flow and irreversible damage. After careful consultation with the veterinary team, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him to prevent further suffering. We are profoundly grateful to our animal care staff for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response at the first sign of concern. Their dedication to Henry’s well-being never wavered. Our other male capybara, Javier, is doing well, and we remain committed to his ongoing care and well-being. Henry was a cherished member of our community, and his loss is deeply felt by all who cared for and knew him. He brought great joy to our guests and played an important role in educating thousands of visitors about this amazing species. Out of respect for Henry, and to allow our staff time to grieve, the aquarium closed Wednesday, May 6th.
