Aqualud was the abandoned French water park on the beach in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, on the northern coast of France. Aqualud opened in 1985 on the Le Touquet seafront, inside that iconic glass pyramid-style building. It became one of the most recognizable family attractions on the Opal Coast, with indoor and outdoor pools, wave pool, jacuzzis, and big slides like Black Hole, Twister, and Kamikaze. Older tourism sources described it as having over 2,000 meters of waterslides and a seasonal outdoor section facing the beach. The closure happened in stages. Aqualud did not reopen properly after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. The official site at one point said the park would remain closed for the 2020 season, but it never came back. By 2021, reports confirmed the closure was permanent and that the site would be replaced by a luxury hotel project. The big reason it closed was not just one thing. The easiest way to explain it is: COVID was the final blow, but the park was already under pressure. It was an aging 1980s water park sitting on extremely valuable beachfront land in a wealthy resort town. The building needed maintenance, the park had limited room to expand, and the town had already been interested in replacing it with a more upscale seafront project.
