Although it’s not an alcohol-free beer, Victoria Bitters has announced a 3.5% mid-strength version in a bid to keep up with young drinkers.
Last year an analysis of 23,000 Australians found that those born between 1997 and 2012 are nearly 20 times more likely to choose not to drink alcohol when compared with Baby Boomers.
The study’s co-author Kirrilly Thompson said that, “Younger Australians are growing up in a different world - one where abstaining from alcohol is increasingly normal and where digital socialising, rising living costs, and health awareness are reshaping how people spend their time and money.”
She added, “This isn’t just a phase; it appears to be a sustained change in behaviour that could have long-term public health benefits.”
The study also found that compared to Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X are drinking less per week than Baby Boomers, but when they do drink, they're consuming more.
