Description

I’ve spent years trying to figure out how to paint clear and moving water. I used to work on this in layers, as you see me create here. Starting with the base layer, I work out what’s happening under that surface, ignoring the reflections over the top. This normally ends up being a little dark. If this layer is thin, then I float a glaze over the top. The trick with the glazing technique is to use transparent pigment, not loads of medium. Finally the glints and highlights are added to the water’s surface. Now, the next challenge for me is to try to work out how to do it in one layer. I think I’m getting closer, but I do enjoy this approach. I have a full version of this demonstration on Tisch Academy. It was loads of fun. There’s a lot packed into this little scene!
