WATCH: Several religious groups in Cebu have expressed growing frustration over the countryโs continuing corruption issues, calling on faith communities to speak up amid mounting public concern.
Responding to questions about why the church has become more politically visible in organized mass actions, Fr. Jose Bagadiong emphasized that speaking out is part of the churchโs mission. โEven Christ is political. It is a moral duty of the church to proclaim justice,โ he said. He added that โif we do not do that then we are complicit with corruption.โ
Other religious leaders shared similar sentiments. โLihok man sad o binuhatan nga dili maayo, dili sad tingali mi magpaka hilom lang. Musulti sad me na we are against it,โ said Sister Judith Lorica of the Association of Consecrated Women of Cebu.
For Imam Muhammad Najeeb Rasul, the involvement of religious groups should not be mistaken for partisanship. โDili na sya politika. Gatan-aw ta kung unsay ikaayo sa katilingban nga ang moral compass dili siya muhiwi,โ he explained.
Pastor Steve Berdin of the Cebu City Interfaith Movement echoed the call for integrity in governance. โWe love God and we love our people, and our people deserve better. We expect our government to be truthful to us,โ he said.
A prayer-march rally organized by the Cebu Anti-Corruption Coalition is set for Sunday, November 30, starting at the Sto. Niรฑo Pilgrim Center and proceeding to Fuente Osmeรฑa Circle.
