Bill targeting discrimination in schools set to be heard in the Senate

After passing in the House with strong support, a bill titled "Advancing Equal Educational Opportunities for All Students in Maryland" is set to be heard in the Senate Wednesday. "At its core, House Bill 649 is about making sure that when Maryland students experience discrimination there is a clear, reliable and timely place to turn at the state level," said Cleveland Horton II, the Executive Director of the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. According to the fiscal note, the bill authorizes the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights to enforce prohibitions against discrimination in educational institutions, especially when it comes to discrimination related to race, color, national origin, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, or marital status.
