A 15-Year-Old Given a Terrible Choice by a Gang

In June 2015, 15-year-old Angel Ariel Escalante Perez lived with his family in Guatemala City. He was a shy and kind teenager who loved soccer, music, and drawing. One afternoon, while walking home from school, Angel was confronted by six gang members. They handed him a gun and told him he had to kill a random bus driver or they would kill him. Angel refused, especially because his own father worked as a bus driver. The gang then forced him to choose how he would die: by machete or by being thrown from a bridge. Angel chose the bridge, and the gang pushed him from the 450-foot-high Incienso Bridge. Miraculously, he survived the fall but was not found for nearly three days. After fighting for his life in the hospital for 15 days, Angel tragically died from his injuries.
