It’s one of the most common questions in endurance sports: Do you actually sweat while you're surrounded by water? More importantly, if you*are sweating, how much fluid are you losing and is it sabotaging your triathlon performance?
To find out, the GTN team and a group of volunteers headed to the pool for a controlled scientific test. With the help of Chris (aka "Minty") from Precision Fuel & Hydration, we weighed ourselves before and after a high-intensity, one-hour swim session to see exactly how much "invisible" weight we lost. From swimming in a wetsuit to comparing "heavy sweaters" vs. "low sweaters," we break down the physiological reasons why your body continues to sweat even when the water is cooling your skin. We also discuss why the "thirst response" lags in the water and how you should adjust your hydration strategy for your next IRONMAN or 70.3.
