Kathakali is a stylized form of art originating from Kerala, India. It is a performance that tells stories through elaborate costumes, hand gestures, dance, facial expressions and makeup. The makeup application is one of the first steps, and is an intricate, time consuming process. Hours are spent applying the face paint, building the textures, and creating the designs with steady hands. As many of y’all know, I am a makeup artist, so this enduring process was very interesting to watch.
