Description

Bait balls are enormous schools of small bait fish that congregate together as a defense against large predators. The quick movements of such a large group of fish confuses predators and makes it almost impossible to zero in on one single fish. Their silvery bodies or stripes make it even easier to distinguish one from another in the midst of the movement. Scuba divers find these bait balls mesmerizing and beautiful, especially when viewed from within. The fish surround divers, blocking out most of the light so that it can be almost like sudden nightfall. These salemas drifted over a group of divers exploring the waters of the Galapagos Islands, providing them with a visual treat, at least until they also saw that the salemas brought with them a group of hungry whitetip and Galapagos sharks. The sharks are a very low threat to the divers but their presence while in feeding mode is an intimidating sight. The salemas have also attracted a bunch of large sealions that are cruising around the bait ball, hoping for as few individuals to break loose from the school so that they can devour them.
