This one genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Nathan Camarena playing “Perfect Pillow” for Meinl Cymbals is some of the most precise yet musical drumming I’ve heard in a long time — and I’m still trying to wrap my head around how this band is writing music like this. The time feel is elastic but controlled. The phrasing feels improvised but clearly isn’t. And the execution is frighteningly calm. From a drum-teacher perspective, this is a masterclass in: • extreme internal time • subdivision awareness without sounding mechanical • touch, balance, and restraint at high complexity • being absurdly “on point” without overplaying This isn’t chops for chops’ sake.
