Space Shuttle Columbia disaster didn’t begin during re-entry. It began 16 days earlier, with something NASA believed was harmless. In 2003, Columbia launched on what appeared to be a routine mission. The crew carried out experiments, communicated with Mission Control, and prepared for a normal return home. Nothing seemed unusual. But high above Earth, something had already gone terribly wrong. As the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere at nearly 17,000 mph, strange sensor failures began appearing inside Mission Control. Temperatures spiked, warning systems started disappearing one by one.
