Today's Freaky Friday episode deep dives into the mysterious and terrifying story of Eileen and Thomas Lonergan, whose tragic disappearance inspired the 2003 film Open Water. In 1988, Eileen and Thomas Lonergan, an adventurous and experienced scuba diving couple, set out on what was supposed to be the dive of their dreams. They boarded a group diving boat off the coast of Port Douglas in Australia, eager to explore one of the seven natural wonders of the world: The Great Barrier Reef. But their dream quickly turned into an unimaginable nightmare. After spending hours underwater swimming between the colourful coral reefs, they resurfaced and found themselves stranded in the middle of the ocean with no boat in sight. They had been left there, forgotten by their tour guides. Although extensive search efforts were launched in the days that followed, Eileen and Thomas were never found. They had vanished into the depths of the ocean, leaving behind only fragments of their story. Their scuba gear was later discovered washed ashore, sparking numerous theories about their fate. Some speculate they were attacked by sharks, while others believe they succumbed to dehydration or exposure.
