Description
Paul asked how he could speed up his recovery from a SLAP tear so he could get back to cycling without shoulder pain.
The truth is he probably won’t like my answer.
Because the next stage of shoulder rehab isn’t about finding a magic exercise. It’s about fixing a few habits that are slowing progress down.
The first issue is where the workouts are happening.
Rehabbing a shoulder properly usually requires access to a full commercial gym. Cable machines allow very precise angles, and dumbbells in 1–2kg increments make it possible to load the shoulder gradually.
Home gyms often force people into the wrong weights. The jump between loads is too big, so exercises end up either too light to stimulate progress or too heavy for proper rehab.
The second factor is sleep.
Recovery from a shoulder injury depends heavily on tissue repair, nervous system recovery, and hormone balance. All of those improve dramatically when someone consistently gets around eight hours of sleep.
Late nights usually don’t add anything valuable to the day. Most of the time it just turns into scrolling or watching Netflix, which makes the next morning harder and recovery slower.
The third point is something I say to a lot of athletes.
You have to choose your hard.
Going to bed earlier is hard.
Getting to the gym five days per week is hard.
But living with shoulder pain and not being able to cycle is also hard.
In my experience, the discipline required to train properly, recover properly, and follow a structured rehab plan is far easier than the frustration of being injured and unable to do the activities you love.
If the goal is to get back on the bike pain-free, those small daily decisions start to matter a lot.
