I take a final look at the disconnected wire and reach a conclusion on it. I then use an RTL-SDR receiver to compare the strength of the local oscillator for each band. Perhaps the LO is weak on the shortwave band and maybe that's the explanation for the performance issues exclusive to that band. Maybe.
