Description
When Nia's mum Moira was diagnosed with dementia, it was her “number one fear” – as Moira had watched her own mother live with the disease.
“Mum and Dad wrote a letter where [Moira] declared that if she was not able to recognise the family, that she would want to be euthanised.”
Nia hasn’t been able to honour that wish, as dementia alone does not qualify as a condition for voluntary assisted dying in Australia.
Dementia is now Australia's biggest killer. To read more about how patients, carers and the government's support systems are managing this public health crisis, tap link in bio.
Or watch Insight episode Dealing with Dementia Tuesday 2 June at 8.30PM on SBS or SBS On Demand.
