Description
Is adventure riding a middle-aged death wish? In retrospect, I think middle age is the perfect time for adventure riding. The 'need for speed!' isn't quite so urgent. The brain is more able to assess risks and thrills and work out a good balance... most of the time. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. And it is mainly young guys killing themselves on motorbikes, right? Apparently not! Research is increasingly showing that young guys are no longer the leading casualties in road riding deaths. It's all of us middle aged guys. Every weekend you can see old dogs with a grey hair and nicely developed beer guts throwing their legs over sports bikes, cruisers, Harleys and all the pseudo-Harleys. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. Is this a middle aged death wish? I had various multiple fractures and a spine fracture in my 40s and 50s which clearly showed I wasn't always making good judgement calls! But I shudder when I remember some of the crazy risks I took in my 20s and 30s which could easily have led to a premature death. Now I don't think this is a bad thing. And of course with our rose-coloured glasses we are just as skilful and fast and balanced and coordinated now as when we were 20 years old. This is the lie we tell ourselves. And the road statistics are living proof. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. It makes me glad I chose adventure and enduro riding for my midlife crisis or middle-aged death wish. Whereas off-road riding you have constantly changing terrain and traction, unpredictable conditions, obstacles such as ruts and logs. There are way more crashes for most of us, but almost always non-lethal. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. It doesn't take a lot of brain cells to see that you are far less likely to die riding adventure bikes and dirt bikes, compared to road motorbikes. Previously a middle aged crisis meant buying a sports car and divorce your wife for your secretary. But now there are all these other options.... Viagra, cosmetic surgery and of course motorbikes. It's just a bummer that middle-aged road riding is proving to be lethal. Apparently many of us old dogs are returning to riding after a few decades of raising families and get our careers established. Although bruises and fractures are a lot more likely. And I love the challenge of it all. Road riding definitely requires skill. But essentially it's a corner, then a straight, then a corner. Then repeat a few hundred times. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure. Middle age is an interesting time... you finally are just starting to get your head together and then your body falls apart. I'm in my mid 60s now and encountering the joys of built-in obsolescence. You become increasingly aware of you own mortality, and a sense that time is running through your fingers. Personally I think taking on a risky activity to relive your youth is extremely sensible... at least in our very small male brains. For me emotional immaturity is the perfect antidote for a mid-life crisis or injecting some excitement into your life before entering that nursing home. I wonder if my wheelchair could be fitted with knobbies? This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. Everyone is trying to sell you stuff you don't need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop. Of course if you are cashed up and into bling, go for it. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. So most of our adventure riding vids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there.
