Patrick never thought a sports injury would change the course of his life. After breaking his ankle, he was prescribed pain pills. When those ran out, heroin filled the gap. What started as pain management became two decades of addiction — and eventually homelessness on the streets of Chicago. “I’ve been in rehab more times than I have fingers and toes,” Patrick says. Addiction isn’t a switch you can flip. It doesn’t disappear because someone wants it to. Patrick has fought for sobriety again and again. Today, he’s battling painful xylazine-related wounds that could have cost him his leg if street doctors hadn’t intervened. This is what addiction really looks like. Not a moral failure.
