Description

RISE up, space crafters! 🪡 Everyone's favorite Artemis II Moon Mascot transformed from idea to material right here at NASA Goddard. Rise was fabricated by Paula Cain, a literal designer for the stars. Paula usually spends her time making thermal blankets to keep spacecraft like the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope at just the right temperature for science, so Rise was a special assignment. She took us behind the seams to see the loving detail in every stitch – including his special pocket, which holds millions of names traveling along with the Artemis II crew. Video description: 0:00 A sewing machine stitching. 0:01 Gloved hands working with shiny materials. 0:02 Zoom out from a pile of shiny material. Text reads "Behind the Seams: Thermal Blanket Lab." 0:03 Two people wearing gloves, cutting shiny material. 0:04 Panning around the thermal blanket lab. 0:05 Close up on a tall spinning bobbin with white thread. 0:06 Pan over a prototype of Rise the Moon Mascot, all one color with rough stitching and features drawn in marker. 0:09 A person in a clean room suit working on shiny material. 0:10 A spacecraft in a clean room in a shiny blanket. 0:11 Another spacecraft in a clean room in a shiny blanket. 0:13 Paula Cain, Thermal Blanket Technician talks in the blanket lab. 0:18 Another spacecraft in a clean room in a shiny blanket. 0:21 Paula. 0:23 Montage of Paula working with material in the lab. 0:35 Pan back to Paula talking in the lab. 0:39 Montage of Paula working. 0:51 Paula talking in the lab. 0:53 Paula walking through the lab to a sewing machine. 1:03 Paula talking by the sewing machine. 1:07 Three pattern pieces shaped like ovals with pointed tips on a gridded table. The center piece has Rise's smile drawn on. 1:09 Paula talking. 1:19 Four fabric pieces that match the patterns. 1:22 Paula sitting behind the sewing machine looking at the pieces. 1:26 Text: The SD card contains millions of names virtually joining the Artemis II crew. 1:39 The four fabric pieces sewn together like a flower, with a tiny zipper pocket along the bottom. Paula unzips the pocket. 1:43 Wider shot of Paula holding the unfinished Rise. 1:48 Panning around the blanket lab, where Paula is working on the sewing machine. 1:51 Paula's gloved hands working on Rise on the sewing machine. 1:54 Panning over Paula's shoulders where she is working on Rise on the sewing machine. Rise's Earth-patterned hat sits next to the machine, also unfolded like a flower. 1:55 Montage of Paula in the blanket lab. 1:57 Panning down from above to face the completed Rise. Rise's hat is blue with green Earth landforms embroidered on it. A loop of fabric at the top of Rise's hat works as a handle. The bill of the hat is black, embroidered with yellow stars and little white and red rockets with long yellow trails. Rise is a white Moon with little crater spots. Rise has a small smile and big eyes. 2:03 Paula talking in the lab. 2:06 The Artemis II crew playing with Rise in zero gravity.
