Legendary Iranian Film Director Jafar Panahi Will Return to Iran After the Oscars

1960-born Jafar Panahi achieved international recognition with his feature film debut, The White Balloon in 1995. The film won the Caméra d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, the first major award won by an Iranian film at Cannes. His latest film is informed by his most recent time as a prisoner in an Iranian jail. He has won the Palme d'Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for ‘It Was Just an Accident’ (2025). With this, Panahi became the only Iranian director who has won four major prizes at the major European film festivals.
