Description
Yesterday, I got up bright and early to do some railfanning on the CN Fulton Subdivision in northwestern Tennessee before heading down to Memphis to catch their weekly siren test. After chasing a southbound mixed freight from Dyersburg to Millington due to it having a pair of IC SD70s for power, I was heading back to Atoka to wait for anything coming through when I saw this Whelen Vortex standing right on US 51 just inside Munford's city limits. As such, I quickly swung around to it and got set-up in the first potentially decent location I could, correctly assuming that this siren would be going off at noon on this day. Sure enough, right at noon, this siren fired on up and did just under a minute of wail! According to @user-mrwedge2005, the Whelens in Munford & Atoka's shared system tend to do about a minute of wail for their twice-weekly tests, sometimes a bit less and sometimes a bit more. Apparently they're also replacing their Whelen Vortexes with Whelen 2910s as well, which is a bit of a shame as, admittedly, I do generally prefer recording rotating Whelens to omni ones.
Munford & Atoka, TN, test their sirens every Wednesday and Saturday at noon, weather permitting.
