Engineering Colleges Face Biggest Shutdown Wave in India, AICTE Report Reveals
A new report from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has highlighted a major shift in India's higher education sector. During the 2025–26 academic year, engineering and technical institutions recorded the highest number of closures among all categories of colleges. According to the regulator, 58 engineering and technical colleges have been placed under "progressive closure," meaning they can no longer admit new first-year students, although existing students will be allowed to complete their degrees.
The report shows that Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra accounted for the largest number of shutdowns, followed by several other states. AICTE says these closures are linked to declining student admissions, shortage of qualified faculty, weak infrastructure, and institutions failing to meet prescribed academic and quality standards. In addition to the college closures, more than 950 engineering and technical courses have also been discontinued across the country.
Education experts believe the trend reflects changing career preferences among students. Over the past few years, many have shifted towards emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, healthcare, management, and skill-based professional courses, while traditional engineering colleges in several regions have struggled to fill seats. At the same time, regulators say the objective is to improve the overall quality of technical education rather than simply increasing the number of institutions.
