It is the first live-action installment and debut film of the DC Universe, the second installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and the second reboot of the Superman film series. The film was released on July 11, 2025. The film is directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl. Thirty years ago, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van sent Kal-El, their infant son, to Earth in order for him to escape from the destruction of Krypton, their planet. Raised as Clark Kent by Jonathan and Martha Kent, his human adoptive parents, the Kryptonian gained his incredible powers from the sun. Having been inspired to his heroism by Jor-El and Lara's farewell message which was damaged on the journey, Clark made his debut as a superhero known as Superman, the most powerful metahuman on the world, while maintaining in a job as a reporter at the Daily Planet alongside Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane, with Lois in a relationship with Clark and aware of his identity. Three years later, Superman stopped the United States-backed war invasion of Jarhanpur by Boravia, drawing scrutiny of billionaire Lex Luthor, Superman's arch-enemy. However, Superman loses a fight for the first time, to a new foe called the Hammer of Boravia. After crashing into the Antarctic ice, a bloodied and beaten Superman summons Krypto with a whistle, who then drags him to the Fortress of Solitude. When they reach the Fortress, Superman is helped onto a special device by his Superman Robots, where he is healed by the power of Earth’s yellow sun. During his healing, Superman is soothed by the partially damaged message that was recovered from the spaceship he arrived in thirty years prior. The message is in Kryptonian, but Four translates their message, which states that they sent him to the planet where they believed he could do the most good, before the message becomes garbled. Finally healed by the sun, Superman departs for Metropolis, unaware that the Engineer has followed him and now knows the location of the Fortress. In Metropolis, Superman re-engages in battle with the Hammer, who is there to retaliate for Superman’s interference in a brewing conflict between the Eastern European nation of Boravia and its neighboring country, Jarhanpur. Inside the LuthorCorp Tower, Lex Luthor and his team watch the fight, as Luthor puppeteers the Hammer by feeding him a predetermined series of moves to counteract Superman’s. The Hammer smashes Superman into the streets below, where he is helped by a food vendor named Malik Ali. With the fight over, the Hammer returns to a defunct military base downriver from Metropolis, where he uses a discrete portal device inside one of the tents to briefly enter a strange space before exiting another portal into the control room at LuthorCorp. As the Hammer removes his helmet, it is revealed that he is actually the mysterious Ultraman, a super-powered being working under Luthor. The next morning, Clark Kent arrives at his job at the Daily Planet, with his latest “interview” with Superman as the front page story—a feat which Ma and Pa Kent call to congratulate him on, though some of his colleagues are less enthused.
