Description
Your Toronto Zoo is proud to join conservation partners around the world in recognizing #ReverseTheRedDay - a global movement focused on stopping biodiversity loss and accelerating the recovery of species at risk. It’s a reminder that while the challenges facing wildlife are urgent, decline is not inevitable when we work together.
Right here at home, our connection to Reverse the Red is one that’s rooted in action and hope. For decades, we have been proud partners in the Vancouver Island Marmot breeding and recovery program, helping safeguard one of Canada’s most critically endangered mammals.
Once reduced to critically low numbers, the Vancouver Island marmot’s story shows what is possible when science, collaboration, and long-term commitment come together. Our pledge this year is reverse the red and allow the Vancouver Island Marmots the opportunity to build a better future and grow in number as a species in the wild.
This work is a powerful example of our Guardians of Wild Strategic Plan, where one of our priority initiatives is to save Canadian species. We will do so by braiding traditional knowledge and conservation science to deliver biobanking, conservation breeding and translocation programs. This ongoing plan is guiding our efforts to protect wildlife across the country - from habitat restoration and population recovery to research, education, and community engagement.
As Canada’s largest zoo, we recognize our responsibility to lead conservation efforts both locally and globally.
By working alongside organizations like Reverse the Red, Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Wilder Institute, our fundraising partners at the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy, governments, Indigenous partners, and communities today and everyday, we are helping turn the tide for species at risk, proving that conservation success is possible and that recovery stories can be written.
Join us today from 11:00am - 3:00pm in your Toronto Zoo's Special Events Centre, where you can learn about our efforts, while enjoying a complimentary hot chocolate participating in various activities. Learn more at torontozoo.com.
On this Reverse the Red Day, we reaffirm our commitment to taking action for wildlife and ensuring a future where Canadian species don’t just survive, but thrive. #GuardiansofWild
