Volunteers who dropped everything when a siren broke the calm of the Marlborough Sounds say they couldn’t beat the flames - but would do it all again in a heartbeat.⁠ ⁠ Coastguard Marlborough said their emergency pagers went off late on Tuesday morning, alerting them to a 15-metre launch on fire near Blumine Island.⁠ ⁠ Coastguard said “flames, smoke and steam poured from the launch” as they battled the blaze for an hour, saying the heat was so intense it scorched trees along the shoreline.⁠ ⁠ “Despite every effort, the vessel could not be saved,” they said.⁠ ⁠ “But the most important outcome was already obtained. No lives were lost. No one was seriously injured.
