In 1678 The Popish Plot was a fabricated conspiracy in England alleging that Catholics Jesuits planned to assassinate King Charles II of England and replace him with his Catholic brother, James, Duke of York. Invented by Titus Oates, the hoax triggered a wave of anti-Catholic hysteria, judicial killings, and political upheaval before being exposed as false. One of the innocent victim of the Popish Plot was the Venerable Edward Mico (alias Harvey), an alumnus of the Venerable English College, Rome, who joined the Jesuits in 1650 and, after many years of missionary work, in England, was arrested.
