In 1678 The Popish Plot was a fabricated conspiracy in England alleging that Catholics Jesuits planned to assassinate King Charles II of England and replace him with his Catholic brother, James, Duke of York. Invented by Titus Oates, the hoax triggered a wave of anti-Catholic hysteria, judicial killings, and political upheaval before being exposed as false.
One of the innocent victim of the Popish Plot was the Venerable Edward Mico (alias Harvey), an alumnus of the Venerable English College, Rome, who joined the Jesuits in 1650 and, after many years of missionary work, in England, was arrested. Mico developed a fever while in captivity and was found dead on 3 December 1678 'on his knees, oppressed with the weight of his irons'
Interestingly, there was a Catholic chapel on Wild Street at the end of the eighteenth century served by the Franciscans, including the famous Ft Arthur O’Leary, before moving to St Patrick’s Soho Square.
