"Our country isn't so lovable right now." That was Robert De Niro's big contribution to the night. While the White House threw an epic UFC card for America's 250th, complete with the Thunderbirds, the Blue Angels, and a packed South Lawn, the Democrats counter-programmed it. They put De Niro at a podium to read a letter that said "regardless of our political affiliation, we all love our country." Then he stopped and went off script. His exact words: "the phrase we all love our country stuck in my throat because our country isn't so lovable right now." They literally could not get through the one line about loving America without choking on it. Truth in advertising. As the host put it, oh god bless them, they're so consistent.
