2026 Can Am Defender Max Limited Review | The SxS That Does Everything?

Time for something different: we spent a full month living with the 2026 Can-Am Defender Max Limited, a four-door side-by-side with an MSRP of about $37,000 as tested, to see why it might beat everything else in the utility UTV segment. Under the back sits a three-cylinder, 95-horsepower Rotax HD11 engine with real torque advantage over cheaper rivals, and under that infotainment screen is what we think is the best 4x4 system on the market right now: fully electronic, with independently lockable front and rear differentials, a rear locker that auto-engages in park, and a genuine mechanical backup for the parking brake on steep grades. Our only real gripes are the backward-hinging rear doors and a winch release that's a little too tucked away. We put it to real work, not just a groomed test loop, hauling chainsaws and gear down overgrown trails, dragging logs with the 4,000-pound winch, climbing loose, eroded switchbacks, and comparing locked versus unlocked differentials through a mogul field to show exactly what each setting buys you. With 2,500 pounds of towing capacity, watertight underseat storage, USB-C power delivery, and a suspension tuned to soak up rough work terrain without beating you up, this is, by our own admission, the side-by-side we'd actually buy next, minus the extra doors and AC.
