Did You Know the Nye Mudstone and Astoria Formation are basically a time capsule from 15–20 million years ago‼️😱 Back in the Miocene, parts of the Oregon Coast were underwater, and fine mud settled to the seafloor over long periods of time, building what we call the Nye Mudstone. Then conditions shifted and a much thicker mix of sand, silt, and sediment started piling in, often influenced by volcanic activity in the region, creating the Astoria Formation. That’s why these layers look and weather differently today: they’re made from different sediment “recipes” laid down in different environments, then lifted and exposed by tectonic forces along the coast. Shocking fact: some rocks on the Oregon Coast formed on the ocean floor and later got pushed up into cliffs you can walk next to today. #Nature #Animals #shorts
