"Hell is just beginning": Ukraine cuts off Crimea from land, sea, and air

Ukraine is intensifying its campaign to isolate occupied Crimea by targeting logistics routes, bridges, energy infrastructure and fuel facilities. According to Kiev's plan, this should deprive Russian troops of the ability to effectively use the peninsula as a main military base in the south and, at the same time, create serious problems for the occupation administration, writes The Telegraph. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated last month that the campaign was only just gaining momentum. "Crimea is being isolated by drones. In the near future, the peninsula will become an island. For Russians, the real hell is just beginning," he said. Ukrainian drones initially attacked the land corridor between Russia and Crimea, as well as railway routes. Later, strikes began on oil depots, power plants, air defense systems, and other critical infrastructure. Recently, tankers of the so-called "shadow fleet" that transport fuel through the Sea of Azov have also come under attack. In addition, Ukrainian forces regularly attack bridges at chokepoints, in particular the Chongar and Genichesk bridges, as well as the R-280 "Novorossiya" highway, which is one of the main supply routes for the occupation forces. Satellite images also recorded significant damage to the oil loading complex in the Kerch port. The consequences of the strikes are already being felt by both Russian military personnel and the civilian population of the occupied peninsula. According to the Institute for the Study of War, fuel shortages have already spread to most regions of Russia. On the peninsula itself, occupation authorities were even forced to temporarily suspend gasoline sales to private individuals. At the same time, a black market for fuel has emerged in Crimea. Gasoline is being sold illegally at significantly inflated prices via Telegram and online platforms. Residents also report regular power outages and water supply problems. "They turn the lights on and off whenever they feel like it, but a long time can go by with almost no power," a Sevastopol resident told The Telegraph. According to her, due to power outages, many stores are closing or operating only on a cash basis. "We're all trying to help each other and share information," she added. Another Sevastopol resident described the situation even more frankly: "Everyone gets around on foot here. There are far fewer cars now, and many people have started riding bicycles and scooters." Crimeans are also increasingly complaining about constant explosions on social media. "Every night in Kerch there's shelling and damage to houses, but the news doesn't even mention it. Fear has become part of everyday life," wrote one Telegram user. This holiday season, nearly 79% of hotel reservations in Crimea were cancelled, the publication notes. Kilometer-long traffic jams formed on the roads leading out of the peninsula, and local businesses began to close their operations en masse due to high costs, fuel shortages, and an unstable power grid. Anton Zemlyanoy, a senior analyst at the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, believes that the Ukrainian campaign is already impacting the capabilities of the Russian army. "There is evidence that Ukrainian attacks are impacting the Russians' ability to use Crimea as a key outpost of their occupation and their main military base in the south," he noted. According to him, logistics problems are already having a direct impact on the front: "Six months ago, the ratio of artillery fire was 2.4 to one in favor of the Russians; now it's 1.6 to one. This was influenced by Ukrainian strikes on depots and logistical difficulties with delivering ammunition."
