One of the saddest things we hear from young athletes is, “I’m just not good enough.” Usually they’re only 10… 11… 12 years old. Imagine deciding who you’re going to become before you’ve even finished primary school. Children are incredibly quick to put labels on themselves. “I’m not athletic.” “I’m not a shooter.” “I’m always on the bench.” The problem with labels is that once children believe them… They often start behaving as if they’re true. That’s why the environment around a young athlete matters so much. Not because it removes challenges. But because it helps stop temporary struggles becoming permanent identities. A bad season doesn’t decide a future. Neither does one bad game.
