I was sitting at home, bored out of my mind, looking for something to keep me occupied. I'd always been fascinated by sand casting, so I decided to teach myself how to turn scrap silver and old coins into jewellery. There was just one problem… I was terrible at it. When the world shut down during Covid, thousands of businesses were struggling to survive. I was sitting at home, bored out of my mind, looking for something to keep me occupied. I'd always been fascinated by sand casting, so I decided to teach myself how to turn scrap silver and old coins into jewellery. There was just one problem… I was terrible at it. My ring casts kept failing. Molten silver wouldn’t fill the mould properly, details were missing, and I spent more time starting again than actually making anything. After watching countless videos and talking to other hobbyists, I realised I wasn’t alone. Everyone seemed to be fighting the same problems. Instead of giving up, I decided to see if I could solve them. What started as a lockdown hobby turned into months of experimenting, designing prototypes and making mistake after mistake. Eventually I created my Ring Core Kit and later my Aircast vacuum-assisted casting base. To my complete surprise, other jewellers and hobbyists wanted them too. I never set out to start a business. I was just trying to make a better ring. In this video I show the journey, demonstrate the tools I invented, and explain how a few crazy ideas, a lot of failures, and a bit of stubbornness accidentally changed my life.
