As Forbes writes , Ukraine has repeatedly changed the situation on the front lines, but over four years of full-scale war, Russia has created armed forces capable of recognizing change, absorbing lessons, and implementing them across all levels of the armed forces. Therefore, Russians are adapting much more quickly today than they did in 2022. "The longer the war lasts, the better and faster the Russians learn," noted retired Australian Major General Mick Ryan. As the publication notes, this training process could prove more important than any single drone. It demonstrates how one of the world's largest armies is adapting to a battlefield where inexpensive UAVs are increasingly playing a role. "One of the most striking examples was the creation of Rubicon, the Russian Center for Advanced Unmanned Technologies, in August 2024. Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and Dmitry Putyata, a former Ukrainian unmanned systems officer, wrote that Rubicon was created to accelerate the spread of battlefield innovations across all branches of the armed forces," the article recalled. They emphasized that Rubicon focuses on engaging Ukrainian drone crews, electronic warfare systems, and logistics routes located 10 to 40 kilometers behind the front line, rather than supporting offensive operations. "Rubicon first demonstrated this approach during the Russian operation to recapture the Kursk region, after which the military expanded its use to eastern Ukraine. In late 2025, it also made extensive use of medium-range attack drones connected to Starlink, allowing operators to strike deeper into Ukraine's rear until access to the network was blocked in February," Forbes emphasizes. Lee noted that Rubicon and the newly created 50th Unmanned Systems Brigade are helping counter Ukrainian drone strikes. Specifically, Jonathan Lippert, president of Defense Tech for Ukraine, stated that in recent months, approximately half of the Ukrainian medium-range attack UAVs intercepted by Rubicon were Hornet systems. Dmitry Zluktenko, a serviceman with Ukraine's 413th RAID Unmanned Systems Regiment, said the Rubicon model has proven more effective than Russia's traditional military structure. He believes its methods will be implemented throughout the Russian army. At the same time, the commander of the mortar battery of the 92nd Brigade, Anatoly Tkachenko, stated that the increased activity of Russian UAVs has complicated logistics on the front lines. "With a 20-kilometer kill zone, organizing logistics is practically impossible. Infantry has to travel 30 kilometers on foot. Mortar crews and drone operators have to travel 10 to 15 kilometers," he noted. Tkachenko emphasized that his unit has not yet encountered the Molniya autonomous drones, indicating that these capabilities are unevenly distributed across the front. "In Ukraine, victory in the drone war may depend on who can turn battlefield innovation into an institutional advantage before the nature of warfare changes again," Forbes concluded.
