Chaos is growing within Iran's military amid the US and Israeli military operation. The IRGC attacked the tanker Skylight, part of a Russian-Iranian "shadow fleet," in the Strait of Hormuz. After the attack, the ship caught fire and was seriously damaged. Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB, reported the incident. The report claimed the ship was attacked because it was "illegally transiting" the Strait of Hormuz. It is noteworthy that this tanker is under US and EU sanctions for illegally transporting Russian and Iranian oil. The attack occurred off the coast of Oman. There were 20 crew members on board: 15 Indian citizens and five Iranian citizens. All were evacuated. Four people were injured to varying degrees. After the attack, the tanker caught fire and began to sink. It's worth noting that the Strait of Hormuz remains a key artery for global energy, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes. On February 28, Tehran announced its closure in response to military action by Israel and the United States. The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that two vessels were attacked, while an “unknown projectile” exploded in close proximity to a third ship, stating that the regional security situation remains volatile amid ongoing military activity and persistent threats to commercial shipping. According to reports, international navigation nearly came to a halt at the entrance of the strait, with analysts warning that continued escalation could push energy prices higher. Brent crude touched $82 before easing to $78 per barrel. Moreover, Reuters reported, citing shipping data, that at least 150 vessels, including tankers carrying crude oil and liquefied natural gas, halted in open waters of the Arabian Gulf outside the Strait of Hormuz. It added that dozens of additional ships and tankers stopped on the opposite side of the strait as attacks in the region continued. Bloomberg noted digital tracking signals indicated that oil tanker traffic through the strait, which carries about 20% of global seaborne oil and a similar share of liquefied natural gas, may have come to a complete stop. In a separate statement, UKMTO said no official closure of the Strait of Hormuz had been announced through formal legal channels, noting that radio communications do not constitute a legally recognized closure, in reference to a message attributed to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warning vessels against crossing the strait. Global markets are bracing for turbulent seas as tensions rise around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint. Recent attacks on oil tankers have spurred jitters among investors, causing a notable surge in oil prices and impacting economic forecasts. Reports suggest that multiple military strikes have taken place across Iran, exacerbating fears of prolonged conflict. In response, OPEC+ has adjusted oil output, though it remains a fraction of global demand.
