Do cold-weather tyres actually make a difference compared to summer tyres? In this video, we test cold weather tyres vs standard tyres using 4 Ferraris at the HORIBA MIRA proving ground to find out which performs best in braking and wet handling. We were invited to the legendary HORIBA MIRA test track to answer a simple question: How much difference do cold-weather tyres actually make? To find out, Sgt Owen Messenger and I were handed the keys to four incredible machines. • 2x Ferrari Purosangues – 725hp naturally aspirated V12 • 2x Ferrari Roma Spiders – 620hp twin turbo V8 But there was a twist. Some of the Ferraris were fitted with cold-weather tyres, while others had standard summer tyres… and we had no idea which was which. Across two real-world tests at the MIRA proving ground, we put them head-to-head to see how tyres affect braking distance, grip, and control. Challenge 1 – Emergency Braking Test Accelerate to 60mph and perform a full emergency stop. The car with the shortest stopping distance wins. Challenge 2 – Wet Handling Circuit Timed laps around MIRA’s wet handling course to see which tyres provide the most grip and fastest lap time. Cold-weather tyres are designed to remain soft and flexible below 7°C, maintaining grip as summer tyres harden and lose performance. They use a different rubber compound, deeper tread patterns, and thousands of tiny sipes designed to bite into wet or cold surfaces. But would we actually feel the difference from behind the wheel?
