Off-duty Clifton police officer shoots, kills pit bull to ‘protect himself’

CLIFTON, Texas (KWTX) - The Clifton Police Department says one of its officers, who was off duty at the time, fatally shot a pit bull after the dog entered its garage and tore through a bag of trash. The police department claims the officer shot the dog “in an effort to protect himself” in a residential area in the 400 block of North Avenue N. “When any pet is shot in Clifton, an investigation is done. I immediately contacted Sheriff Trace Hendricks and have asked his office to investigate this incident. Once his office has completed its investigation, we will be notified,” Clifton Police Chief Chris Blanton said. The department will not be handling this investigation, Blanton further said.
