Oscar Harris - Disco Calypso (Live) • TopPop

Oscar Harris (born 30 November 1943 in Albina, Suriname) is a Surinamese-Dutch singer who became one of the most successful Surinamese artists in the Netherlands during the 1970s and 1980s. As of 2026, he is still alive and remains an important figure in Dutch popular music. Harris moved to the Netherlands in 1963 to study architecture and theology before pursuing a professional music career. He first gained recognition as the lead singer of The Twinkle Stars, a popular Surinamese-Dutch band. Their biggest success was the hit single "Soldiers Prayer" which reached No. 1 in the Dutch charts in 1972. After leaving The Twinkle Stars in 1973, Harris launched a successful solo career. His greatest solo success came with "Song for the Children" (1980), which reached No. 3 in the Dutch Top 40 and became an international hit, particularly in several European countries and Indonesia. Other notable singles include "Alta Gracia," "Try a Little Love," "Honey Conny," "Love Is the Word", and "Disco Calypso" (1980), a Caribbean-inspired pop single that became a popular radio and club favorite in the Netherlands and several European countries. The song reached No. 25 in the Dutch Top 40. His album catalogue includes releases such as "Alta Gracia" (1974), "Song for the Children" (1980) and numerous compilation albums celebrating his greatest hits. Throughout his career, Harris collaborated with artists including Debbie Jenner (as Oscar & Debbie), Ivy Christiaans (Oscar & Ivy) and Marjorie Barnes.
