Hi berry sweet bakers! Today we’re getting crafty by turning vanilla cake into yarn ball treats! Strawberry Shortcake dishes out her berry best recipes, from cakes to cookies to tarts and yes, even her very own iconic strawberry shortcake. Follow along at home with easy-to-follow measurements and instructions, and bake the magic happen! Yarn Ball Cake Pop Recipe Vanilla Cake Ingredients • 1 large egg • 1/4 cup sour cream • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 cup water • 1 cup white sugar • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Berry Important First Step Ask a grown-up to help set the oven to 350°F and move the rack to the middle. Let’s Bake the Vanilla Cake 1. Mix the Sweet Start In a mixing bowl, beat the egg and sugar together until blended and smooth. 2. Add the Flavor Mix in the salt, baking soda, and vanilla until just combined. 3. Build the Batter With the mixer on low, add half the flour. Pour in the melted butter and mix gently. Scrape down the sides of the bowl so everything stays together. Add the rest of the flour, then the water, mixing just until smooth. 4. Pan and Bake Grease one 8-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper. Pour in the batter and gently tap the pan on the counter to pop air bubbles. 5. Bake Time Bake for 25–30 minutes. Ask a grown-up to help check with a toothpick. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. 6. Cool and Crumble Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then turn it out onto a parchment-lined rack. Once fully cool, place the cake in a bowl and gently break it into medium crumbs using your hands. Vanilla Buttercream Ingredients • 4 oz unsalted butter, softened • 3/4 cup powdered sugar • A pinch of salt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Let’s Make the Buttercream 1. Whip the Butter Beat the softened butter until smooth and fluffy. 2. Sweeten It Up Add powdered sugar and salt. Mix until creamy. 3. Finish with Vanilla Add vanilla and mix for about 30 seconds until light and smooth. Making the Cake Balls 1. Mix and Squish Add buttercream to the cake crumbs one tablespoon at a time. Use your hands to mix until the cake feels like soft dough. 2. Test the Dough Roll a small ball. If you see cracks, add a little more buttercream. 3. Roll the Yarn Balls Scoop about one tablespoon of mixture per ball. Roll between your hands for 10–15 seconds until round and smooth. 4. Chill Out Place all the cake balls on a plate and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Melting Chocolate and Decorating 1. Melt the Colors Melt each color of candy melts in the microwave, heating in 30-second bursts and stirring until smooth. If needed, add a few drops of coconut or vegetable oil to make it drippier. 2. Dip the Cake Balls Place a chilled cake ball on a fork. Spoon melted chocolate over the top until covered. Tap gently to remove extrachocolate and place on parchment to set. 3. Create the Yarn Look Rewarm the chocolate. Dip a fork or butter knife into the melted chocolate and wave it back and forth over the cake ball. Turn the cake ball a quarter turn and repeat. Keep going until it looks like wrapped yarn. 4. Add the Knitting Needles Cut toothpicks in half with scissors. Gently stick two into each cake ball to look like tiny knitting needles. For extra hold, dip the toothpick tips in melted chocolate before placing. 5. Final Touch Place each finished yarn ball into a small chocolate cup liner. Now you have Vanilla Yarn Ball Cake Balls that look crafty, cozy, and berry sweet.
